Alexander Graham Bell (left) and James A. Garfield (right)

Lesson Overview

The Assassination of Garfield story invites learners to experience how some STEM professionals must work quickly and under unusual circumstances to solve problems.  Using knowledge of the telephone and its components, Bell and his colleagues invented devices to try to find the bullet in Garfield’s back.  In the workshop we will explore what Bell and his associates knew and how they adapted the technology of the telegraph, microphone, speaker, and ultimately designed a metal detector.

In each module there will be several explorations.  Respond to each as requested as you move through the material.  These are recorded as complete/incomplete so you can track your progress. Whenever you see the prompt: PLEASE RESPOND, please enter a comment, question, data or input as requested.

PLEASE RESPOND: Please let us know, “got it!”  Or, if you have initial questions, just respond in that way or email mjaeger@eou.edu.
