Renewable Energy Leadership Lab
Renewable Energy Leadership Lab:
An immersive energy curriculum development experience
What is the Renewable Energy Leadership Lab?
Together with schools, educators and industry, CE strives to build a clean energy future to ensure that our communities and the environment are thriving and resilient. Each year CE selects 5 teachers from a pool of applicants to participate in its Renewable Energy Leadership Lab (RELL), which is designed to create engaging and relevant renewable energy lessons accessible to teachers across the country.
Participating teachers will be part of a small group of educators collaborating throughout the year designing, testing and implementing exciting new classroom units while diving deeper into the renewable energy sciences. “Units” are typically multi-day or multi-week investigations of larger concepts, broken into separate lesson plans.
Leadership Lab participants develop either new units and lessons anchored in engineering design principles, or adapt existing inquiry projects into their unique classroom setting in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards. By the end of the Leadership Lab year, teachers will have developed strong foundations in renewable energy while creating peer-reviewed, classroom-tested curricula published in CE’s online Educator Library.
Why should I apply?
In addition to collaborating with peers and content specialists both in person and remotely, participants receive the following benefits:
-In-person discussion of effective pedagogy and supportive content development strategies
-Remote check-ins as well as thoughtful peer-to-peer review and feedback
-A $5,000 stipend to develop and test lessons (milestone-based, two installments)
-Up to $500 in materials for summer testing phase
-Up to $1,000 in materials for implementing their lessons in the classroom
-Up to $2,000 in materials for testing and implementing up to two additional lessons (@$1,000 per additional lesson/unit)
-Opportunities to present at conferences and professional development events
Am I eligible?
This opportunity is open to all Pacific Northwest K‑12 teachers who are able to attend the mandatory meetings. Participants are responsible for coordinating travel and lodging (if necessary) for all in-person group meetings and may use a portion of their stipend to cover associated costs.
What else should I know?
The Renewable Energy Leadership Lab is a yearlong, collaborative professional development opportunity that runs from June 2018 through June 2019. Throughout the year, there will be a minimum of four mandatory in-person collaborative work sessions at the BEF office located in downtown Portland and four mandatory remote meetings taking place in a webinar format. These sessions function as an opportunity for the teacher group to meet, collaborate, discuss, test, and peer review each other’s proposed units. This type of collaboration among teachers is a critical part of what makes this program unique, valuable, and effective.
CE strongly encourages applicants to secure buy‑in and support from their local Districts/School Administrations to support all leadership development opportunities.
