Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife - Lower Snake River Compensation Plan

Traveling on Interstate 84 either West or East bound, take exit 171, Paterson Ferry Rd. Go North on Paterson Ferry Rd. towards the Columbia River. You will come to a stop sign. This is Highway 730. Cross Highway 730 and continue on Paterson Ferry Rd. until you can go no further and must turn left or right. You will see a grain elevator on your left, and directly in front of you is the Columbia River. Turn right. You will see the Irrigon Steelhead hatchery sign. You will first come to Umatilla Fish Hatchery on your left, but continue past that hatchery until you come to Irrigon Fish Hatchery. You will see residences on your right and raceways with bird netting around them on your left. The main office will be on your left in plain sight, in between sections of raceways. There is public parking in front of the office.

The Irrigon/Umatilla Fish Hatchery complex are Federal and State fish hatcheries that cooperatively raise a variety of Salmonids including Rainbow Trout, Spring and Fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead. Both facilities work with tribal co-managers Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and Nez Perce Tribal Fisheries (NPT).

The Irrigon Fish Hatchery provides the following for pre K – 6th grade, middle school, high school, and college students:

  • Career or Club mentoring
  • The Irrigon Hatcher also has connection in the Lookingglass Hatchery (Elgin, OR) and the Umatilla Hatchery (Irrigon, OR)

Students who visit the hatchery will get an exciting insight into rearing, incubation, and feed programs at the hatchery. The Irrigon Fish Hatchery can accompany a group of 40 – 50 people.
