Defrees Ranch

11950 Huckleberry Loop, Baker City, OR 97814

Take hwy 7 from Baker towards Sumpter. Go 25 miles. Once past Phillips Resevoir we are the second left – Huckleberry Loop. This is the same turn that you take for the Sumpter Valley Restoration Railroad. Go one mile. We are the road cap on your left that says Defrees Ranch. There is a place for buses to turn around at the end of our drive.

The Defrees Ranch is a Certified Century Ranch nestled in the Blue Mountain valley called Sumpter in northeastern Oregon’s Baker County. Defrees Ranch is passionate about sustainable agriculture. The Defrees not only have a cattle operation, but they also have a tree farm.

For Students

The Defrees Ranch provides the following for pre K – 6th grade, middle school, high school, and college students:

  • Field Trip or Tour
  • Career or Club mentoring

Students visiting the ranch can see cattle operations, logging demonstrations, restoration of dredge tailings, tree identification and a small operating saw mill. Defrees Ranch can accommodate tour sizes of 100 students or more depending on the activity. Visitors are required to wear the following:

  1. Pants and closed toed shoes
  2. Insect spray during the summer

The Defrees expect anyone using the ranch to leave it as they found it. Anything brought in should be taken out. They expect the livestock, the trees, grass and shrubs and the equipment all to be treated with respect.
