The Defrees Ranch is a Certified Century Ranch nestled in the Blue Mountain valley called Sumpter in northeastern Oregon’s Baker County. Defrees Ranch is passionate about sustainable agriculture. The Defrees not only have a cattle operation, but they also have a tree farm.

Students visiting the ranch can see cattle operations, logging demonstrations, restoration of dredge tailings, tree identification and a small operating saw mill. Defrees Ranch can accommodate tour sizes of 100 students or more depending on the activity. Visitors are required to wear the following:

  2. Insect spray during the summer

The Defrees expect anyone using the ranch to leave it as they found it. Anything brought in should be taken out. They expect the livestock, the trees, grass and shrubs and the equipment all to be treated with respect.

The Irrigon/Umatilla Fish Hatchery complex are Federal and State fish hatcheries that cooperatively raise a variety of Salmonids including Rainbow Trout, Spring and Fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead. Both facilities work with tribal co-managers Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and Nez Perce Tribal Fisheries (NPT).

Research and Extension in the general mission of the Experimental Station in Hermiston. Extension faculty work with business people, growers, foresters, youth, and community leaders. They see first-hand what’s working, and what’s not working, in Oregon communities and they are the liaison between Universities Researchers and Stakeholders. Most of the faculty located at the Experimental Station in Hermiston have an extensive mixed of Extension-Research components. My program (Rondon) focuses on applied entomology, which relates to the study of the biology, ecology, insect-plant interactions, and management of insects. Every year, students, interns, graduate students, and early career professionals join my lab to learn about how to develop programs that can help growers productivity.

Pendleton UAS Range Mission Control and Innovation Center supports UAS Operations and Advancement at the Pendleton UAS Range. Located in beautiful eastern Oregon, the PUR offers both conventional and unconventional takeoff and landing capability from the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport (KPDT). The airport enjoys over 300 VFR days per year and can accommodate up to a Boeing 757. KPDT offers a unique testing environment that features a broad blend of dissimilar aircraft types, which includes commercial passenger, cargo and charter flights as well as, military Chinook helicopters and Shadow UAS.

The Mission Control and Innovation Center (MCIC) is located right on the Pendleton airport grounds. They have a fully functional mission control room that supports UAS operations at the UAS Range. This can be set up for simulation if there is not a live UAS flight at the time. They also have, as part of the Innovation Center, rapid prototyping that consists of electronics, Arduino and Raspberry Pi programming, 3D modelling, Virtual Reality, and 3D printing. MCIC can also show room-scale virtual reality demos involving data visualization, new invention conceptualization and prototyping, robotics, and teaching methods. MCIC can accompany up to 30 people at a time.

Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area features the largest hardstem bulrush marsh remaining in Northeast Oregon. As the concept of waterfowl flyway management was endorsed and developed, wildlife areas were acquired and managed as part of a larger plan focused on migratory waterfowl needs. Because this area is intended to protect nesting and migrating waterfowl, public access is limited to viewpoints and a one-mile nature trail, except during hunting season.
