Cottonwood Crossing Summer Institute
Studies at Cottonwood Canyon State Park
Every year in June high school students and teachers from eastern Oregon arrive at one of Oregon's newest state parks for a week-long immersion in studies related to nature and culture. Cottonwood Crossing Summer Institute is a field studies program that uses the park setting for project-based learning on topics ranging from hydrology and botany to archaeology and photojournalism.
Led by experts in their fields, students gain experience and a deep understanding of these topics while earning college credit from Eastern Oregon University. Meanwhile, their teachers are developing plans to bring these local learning opportunities back to the classroom for the next school year. Along with learning field methods used by professional scientists and researchers, the teachers have a rare opportunity to spend time collaborating with colleagues and observing how students respond to project-based learning in an outdoor classroom.
